Breathing New Life
15 years ago, in 2003, Cik Kamariah, one of the siblings of the Abdullah family who owned the house, was faced with a problem and that was what to do with her family’s house on Pulau Ubin. Her grandparents who had been living in and maintaining the house had passed on and remaining family members had moved to mainland Singapore, putting the future of the house in question.
She and a group of her friends came together to think of a way to keep the house relevant, to keep the house ‘alive’ instead of condemning the house to the future of a family getaway that was visited and maintained once in a while. Today, Mdm Ruqxana of Cookery Magic conducts cooking classes at the house.

After my grandparents pass away, there was no one left to take care of the house. I feel quite sayang ah.. So about 15 years ago, I invited my friends to the house to discuss what we can do about it. My friend Ratifah, who is a travel agency director, said that she will tell all the travel agencies to visit the kampung house. The house has to look special, so I painted it, cleaned the house to make it clean enough. (for the visitors)
It is my dream to restore the house so more people can come and appreciate it.
